Roma - the only place to be this Easter
Roma's Easter in the Country, the premier event of the region, will be held from 2-5 April. With a wide variety of exciting events on offer and the best time of the year to visit Roma, this event is the perfect excuse for new visitors and former residents to discover Roma and the Maranoa.
The iconic goat races held on Saturday morning will capture the delight of the huge crowds that adorn the main street. The vibrant street parade which includes some great family entertainment will ensure that this event will be more exciting and colourful than ever, while the country markets will add to the experience.
A wonderful array of musical entertainment is on offer. A major coup for Easter in the Country this year is return to Roma for the nationally acclaimed Walmsley Brothers. Brendan Walmsley has a committed and loyal following, having collected five song-writing awards from the prestigious Tamworth Country Music Festival and composed Bottle Tree Lane - a song about Roma's own Avenue of Heroes. The brothers are sure to dazzle the audience with their dynamic and compelling performances on Saturday night. Other musical highlights include Friday night where the classic sound of the Big Band will get the audience up and moving.
Huge crowds are expected at the action-packed events such as the mud derby, drag racing, motocross, and speedway. The Mud Derby has now become a classic Easter in the Country event, where visitors witness a great array of vehicles that "get dirty" on Saturday afternoon.
Roma's famous Night Rodeo will again deliver thrills and spills at events such as rope and tie, bullrides and steer wrestling. Friday night will see the return of the popular Bucking Thunder Downunder, where professional bullriders become the centre of attention.
The Poet's Breakfast and Campfire Show, Roma's country race meet, Hobbies and Collectables and the Easter Art Exhibition offer a gentle pace for those looking for a little less action. History buffs will be pleased to discover the colourful and rich past of Roma through the town coach tours, while garden enthusiasts and lover of the Australian bush can partake in a tour through the intriguing Roma Bush Gardens which showcases eleven vegetation communities around the Railway Dam.
Children will be well catered for and Friday afternoon at the Big Rig Parklands especially will be popular with the kids. Following the huge success of the Easter Egg Hunt last year, entertainment will include pinata, children's activities, miniature train rides and the Easter Egg Hunt as well.
A diverse selection of arts, crafts, homewares, clothes and food stalls, where delicious treats can be sampled, will again be available at the Country Markets. On both Saturday and Sunday, the markets provide the perfect opportunity to buy, browse or simply take a break from the busy and exciting program that makes up Easter in the Country.
Origin Energy will continue to support this iconic event for at least the next two years, while many local businesses and organisations will again come together to ensure that this event remains the premier event of the region.
Admission prices for Easter in the Country activities range from $2 to $20. Roma has a wide range of accommodation from motels to caravan and camping sites, and we advise arranging accommodation as soon as possible as this event is very popular.
Easter in the Country is a great celebration for locals and a terrific Easter holiday alternative for visitors. For more information please phone the Roma Visitor Information Centre on 07 4622 8676 or visit www.easterinthecountry.com.au
